Safeguarding Democracy

The Crucial Role of Democratic Institutions

2024 is a pivotal election year in Europe, the U.S., and across the globe. The significance of robust democratic structures with checks and balances will become even more apparent.

The dynamics of transatlantic relations, hinging on the outcomes of these elections, underscore the role that democratic institutions play in maintaining stability, accountability, and the rule of law.

Integrity of Institutions

Democracy thrives when supported by a network of institutions. This network spans the globe and is critical to the transatlantic relationship — the values that inform it, and the the institutions that operationalize it.

Checks and balances, woven into the fabric of governance, prevent the abuse of power and cultivate a diverse environment. The delicate interplay of checks and balances ensures that power is not concentrated in the hands of a few, fostering a system where decisions are made collectively and with the broader interests of the populace in mind.

Democratic institutions are under threat, and it is crucial to discover how we can rebalance the system.

Free & Fair Elections

Elections, the cornerstone of democratic governance, wield immense influence in shaping our path. Transparency and fairness in electoral processes determine the legitimacy of those in power. Robust democratic institutions, such as electoral commissions and oversight bodies, are essential for guaranteeing that elections are free and fair. These institutions prevent the manipulation of electoral outcomes and ensure that the will of the people prevails. Free and fair will be crucial in the 2024 super-election year.

In the U.S., the potential for legal challenges, as witnessed during the 2020 election, highlights the importance of a robust democratic framework. Voter discrimination, suppression of free speech, and growing economic inequality serve as a reminder that elections are vital to maintaining democracy.

Rule of Law

A well-established legal framework is necessary for democracy. Legal institutions act as the bedrock, ensuring that the principles enshrined in constitutions are upheld. Rule of law provides safeguards against the erosion of democratic values, offering a recourse for citizens and leaders alike. It is a powerful tool for preventing the concentration of power and preserving the rights and freedoms of individuals. As democracy has been facing a decline in the past few years, strong rule of law has been impacted.

In the U.S. the Supreme Court will rule on whether Donald Trump can run for president again, following lawsuits in many states seeking to disqualify Trump due to the insurrection during the U.S. Capitol riot in 2021. The case is the court's most direct involvment in a presidential election since more than 25 years.

On the occasion of the 60th Munich Security Conference, coming up in a few weeks, we will discuss these present challenges and opportunities with policy experts like Ben Rhodes, Karen Donfried, and Eva Maydell.
